Explore the tactile appeal of Thermoplastic Elastomers at PDM

Vita Thermoplastic Polymers (VTP), the UK arm of VTC TPE Group will be encouraging visitors to their stand at Plastics Design & Moulding 2008 (PDM) to ‘Touch it, Flex it, Grip it and Stretch it!’ The aim is to highlight the tactile appeal of thermoplastic elastomers (TPE) and the crucial role the feel of a material can play in product design.

On display will be material samples from the Group’s leading TPE brands; Dryflex, Mediprene and Marfran, showcasing the wide range of hardnesses, textures and flexibility the materials offer. As consumers are increasingly demanding aesthetic appeal as well as functional attributes, the feel of a product can create as much emotional connection as the colour or shape. VTC TPE Group works with product designers to deliver custom compounded TPE solutions to a range of markets including medical, automotive, packaging and consumer, examples of which will be on display on the VTP stand (K16) at PDM.

Martin Bradbury, area sales manager at VTP commented: “We aim to make our stand as interactive as possible. Brochures and graphics in isolation will not give you the true sense of the material’s versatility; the tactile and soft-touch appeal of our TPEs takes product design beyond the purely visual. From gel-soft to rigid, silky smooth to non-slip, our materials impart a sense of animation to the products they help shape. This is exactly why we want to give visitors to our stand the opportunity to touch and feel the materials through a series of interactive displays.”

Dryflex, Mediprene and Marfran TPEs offer many design advantages; adhesion compounds can be used with engineering thermoplastics such as ABS and PC to give a soft-touch feel to a rigid application. The materials are easy to colour and product differentiation can be achieved by adding speciality effects such as metallic, pearlescent or thermochromic masterbatches.

“PDM is an ideal platform for us to showcase the tactile appeal and processing benefits of our TPEs to an audience of designers, processors and manufacturers” concluded sales manager, Trevor Leadbeater.
